ADULT TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
Adults working directly with girls must complete an orientation prior to leadership appointment, and an age level course within one year. To continue as a troop leader of a different age level, troop leaders must take the appropriate age level training prior to continuing leadership at the new age level.
Scheduled courses will give you the opportunity to interact and discuss ideas and concerns in a group and to learn from
other leaders’ experiences. If you absolutely cannot attend any of the scheduled trainings, contact the Cullen Girl Scout Center, and we will do our best to arrange an alternative learning opportunity for you.
Trainings are open to leaders, helpers, parents, and Girl Scouts ages 15-17 working as a Leader-in-Training. It is especially helpful when co-leaders and assistant leaders can attend together. Please make arrangements to leave children and infants at home. They can be distracting to yourself and others.
New Leader Orientation
New leaders must complete new leader orientation before attending age level training. Orientation will give you the information to organize your troop and begin meeting with girls. We recommend that you meet with your troop once or twice BEFORE attending the age level training. This will help you to relate and apply what you are learning to your actual situation. Orientation, followed by an age level training fulfills your requirements for troop leadership and is the first step in earning the Leadership Development Pin. We encourage assistant leaders and other adults working with troops to take this training also. It is an introduction to the Girl Scout program, Shining Trail Council and the steps needed to get started as the leader of a troop. Orientation also covers basic information including how to organize and register your troop, a guide for meetings and booklets on policies and safety procedures. It is very important that you attend an orientation prior to taking other courses. There are two types of New Leader Orientation training. You can take the three hour training or on-line. If you choose to take this training online, you must complete the one-hour follow-up training from a council trainer. You will receive the leader resource manual, Safety-Wise book, the Program & Training Guide, and the training outline. Online training must be completed prior to the follow-up.
Age Level Trainings
Age Level trainings will introduce you to your age level of Girl Scouts. You will learn how to use your age level resources, how to finance the troop program, how girls earn Daisy Petals, Brownie Try-Its or Girl Scout Badges and how to work with parents and others for support. Age appropriate songs, games, ceremonies, and craft ideas will also be shared along with important safety standards. Age level courses are offered at no cost.
What Do I Need to Bring to a Training?
You will need to bring: items given to you by Service Team personnel: Girl Scout Leader Resource Manual, Safety-Wise, Program & Training Guide, paper and a pen. Leaders should bring the appropriate age level handbook and Leader’s Guide. If you do not yet have these materials, extra copies are available for check out at Your Girl Scout Library.
Standard First Aid & Adult CPR
This training is offered from instructors who are also Girl Scout Trainers. Many Girl Scout activities require a First Aid certified adult to accompany the troop. This training provides certification through Red Cross chapters and the American Heart Association in First Aid and Adult CPR. Adults needing to recertify in CPR only may do so at these trainings. To recertify, please indicate on the training registration form. This training partially fulfills requirement #4 for the Leadership Development Pin or renewal hours can be applied to the additional recognition. Fee is $10 or $20 to purchase a First Aid book.
OUTDOOR TRAINING
There are two levels of training: Troop House Training and Camp Out Training. These trainings provide the troop leader with a progressive outdoor program for her troop. Both trainings will be offered in the fall and spring at Camp L-Kee-Ta. Other trainings and enrichments will be offered periodically.
Troop House Training
This training certifies a leader with a troop wanting to spend the night in the Camp L-Kee-Ta Troop House. Troops must be accompanied by an adult with Troop House Training certification for an overnight stay. This training will be held on a weekday evening and last no more than two hours. Training includes: reservation procedures, checklists, facilities tour, girl planning and Safety-Wise requirements. Cost is $3 and includes a manual.
Camp Out Training
This training certifies a leader to camp anywhere else at Camp L-Kee-Ta or another rustic site. Troops must be accompanied by an adult with Camp Out Training certification. Please note: Troop House Training is a prerequisite for Camp Out Training. The four hour evening training is at Camp L-Kee-Ta and will cover the eight basic skills and include fire buiding, cooking and hiking. Both trainings will be offered in the fall and spring at Camp L-kee-Ta. An overnight stay following the four hour training will be required for those not having ever stayed at camp in a hut, tent or cabin previously. Cost is $8 and includes a manual, snacks and meal.
Registration Procedures
Pre-requisite for any age level is New Leader Orientation Training. Registations are due one week prior to the training session. Registration forms are also in the Program & Training Guide. You can register by mail, phone, fax, or email.
Training Recognitions
The Leadership Development Pin and its leaf attachments recognize leaders who complete designated training requirements. Information for this award can be found on the "Forms" link.
Cancellations OR Changes
Only registered participants will be notified of cancellations. If a training does not have at least four registered participants one week before the training, the trainer will cancel the course and notify the appropriate individuals. "Drop-ins" place a burden on trainers - trainers need to prepare supplies and handouts, so please register on time.
Who are the Trainers?
Shining Trail Council trainers are volunteers like you. They have served as leaders and Service Team members. They have "been around the Girl Scout block" and received special training so they, in turn, can train you on how to be a great leader! Interested in being a trainer? Contact Jen Busard by email or call 319-752-3639 for more information.
Service Units
Shining Trail Council is divided into 9 Service Units, each representing a different geographic area of the council. Each Service Unit is led by a team of volunteers who coordinate Girl Scout activities in that area. Volunteers in the Service Unit meet once a month during the school year to receive information about upcoming programs, plan events and share with each other. Shining Trail's Service Units are:
