Girl Scouts of Shining Trail Council will honor Karen Hassel at its 2006 Woman of Distinction Celebration on April 28, 2006 at the Burlington Golf Club. The Woman of Distinction recognizes a member of the community who represents the ideals of Girl Scouting. Girl Scouts of Shining Trail Council, Inc. chose Karen Hassel for the Woman of Distinction award based not only on her countless leadership roles and volunteer hours, but also for her service to Girl Scouts. Musical performance has always been Karen’s passion. Her ability to lead many organizations associated with the arts is a great example to young girls as they develop their own talents and leadership skills for the future.

After joining the Burlington Junior Women’s Club, Karen served as President, Treasurer, and Co-Chair of “Follies”, a fundraising event. She also used her talent onstage as one of the “Follies” outstanding performers. She sang and performed with a local group known as “After 8” for several years. Burlington Fine Arts League benefited from Karen’s leadership skills where she served as President, Vice-President, and Co-Chair of GALA.

Karen was Choir Director and served on the Worship Committee for 19 years at the First Christian Church in Burlington. Karen’s in-laws left Memorial Funds to the church eight years ago for developing a Handbell group. As Director since the group’s formation, Karen inspires talented ringers to provide the splendid sound of bells for First Christian Church.

Karen participates in Bel Canto Chorale and serves as President of this area’s Chapter Board of SEISO (Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra). She is past President and Treasurer of PEO Chapter P and served on the March of Dimes Walk America committee for two years.

Growing up on a farm in Warren County Illinois, Karen developed her talent and interest in music throughout high school and at her church. Local judges recognized her vocal talent and bubbly personality when they crowned her Miss Warren County and sent her to the 1969 Miss Illinois Pageant. Karen sang onstage at the pageant in front of an audience with a full orchestra broadcast live on television. She acclaims this as the highlight of her teen years. With her passion for music, Karen went on to the University of Iowa where she studied nursing, was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority, played in the band, and sang in the choir.

Karen met her husband, Bill, on a blind date while attending the University of Iowa. This year they will celebrate 35 years of marriage. They are the proud parents of Jeff and Wendy and grandparents to four. In her children’s early years, Karen served as PTA President, and helped with Wendy’s Girl Scout Troop with badges and campouts. She also served as Secretary on the Girl Scout Board of Directors from 1989 – 1991.

For the past 30 years, Karen has been the glue for Pediatric Associates as their Office Manager. She is a member of the state level IMGMA (Iowa Medical Managers Association) and started a local chapter for which she serves as President. She also serves on the Medical Assistant Advisory Board at Southeastern Community College, which meets annually to discuss curriculum for current students.

Karen devotes her leisure time to visiting her children and grandchildren and watching her son-in-law’s NBA ballgames.

Join us in celebrating Karen’s achievements. To register for this special event, contact Joyce at 319-752-3639 or jvance@girlscoutsofstc.org
